The landscape around St. Marys

Last summer Tony Hunt from Yorkshire Archaeological Aerial Mapping flew his drones over the old manor at Nether Silton. Impressed by the results, we invited him to fly over St Mary’s at Over Silton to see what he could see.

The most obvious feature that can be seen from Tony’s survey is the extent of lychets, these are the terracing that surround the church. If you look closely you can see the ridge and furrow plough marks running along the terrace, that are still visible in the image. What isn’t visible is any village surrounding the church.

We asked community archaeologist Jon Kenny to talk us through the survey, he explains where any lost buildings might be.
